91 mQ

Friedrichshain

The project space is situated in a former brewery in East Berlin. The building is currently transforming itself through the presence of numerous workshops, studios and spaces for artistic experimentation into a hub for creative experimentation. The decision to open a project space in this kind of environment places 91mQ in opposition to the current art system of commercial galleries and art fairs. 91mQ places the artist at the heart of the contemporary art debate. The aim of the project is to create links with other sites within the art world. 91mQ believes in art as a line of thought that is vital to our understanding of the development of the world in which we live. A programme of monthly exhibitions, video screenings, artist's talks and live performances will be implemented in order to examine the role of contemporary art in the world today. 91mQ wishes to encourage a dialogue between a variety of people and communities be they artists filmmakers, video artists, writers or critics, 91mQ encourages both curated thematic group exhibitions and exhibitions by individual artists developed from open submission calls. 91mQ is interested in exploring the interrelation between different cultural activities and different communities. To this end, 91mQ exhibits a wide variety of work from across Europe, in addition to work from the local community and gives marginalized practices (film, video, performance) equal status with the visual arts. 91mQ provides a place where artists can meet, talk and exhibit along with local and international peers and influences. 91mQ dedicated to delivering a year round programme of exhibitions and events which reflect the wide and changing nature of artists practice. It will embrace artists at all stages of their career in a range of contemporary concerns and issues. 91mQ will also acts as a point of exchange by introducing artists from out-with the city and participate in reciprocal projects/exhibitions groups based nationally and internationally. 91mQ is an artist run space in Berlin. It was founded in 2008 by Marco Giani and Elena Bellantoni, two berlin based Italian artists. Federica Di Venuta, Sunshine Wong and Fabio Campagna joined the project and are now active collaborators.

AANDO FINE ART

Mitte

AANDO FINE ART was founded by the Korean gallerist Wonkyung Byun. In the past years, Mr. Byun has worked in international galleries and reached considerable acclaim as a photography dealer, in particular for his immense contribution to the introduction of German photography to the Korean art scene. His new gallery in Berlin does not focus on photography alone but presents artworks in a variety of media following numerous concepts. The programme includes predominantly – if not exclusively – contemporary art from Asia and Europe, representing internationally renowned as well as emerging artists. In this way, the gallery brings together different worlds in Berlin, bridging the distance between East and West through the medium of art. Artists represented by AANDO FINE ART include Bae, Bien-U (photography), ChangWon Lee (installation), Hong Chun Park (photography), Ignas Krunglevicius (installation), Choi Jeong Hwa (installation), Young Jae Lee (ceramic sculpture) and Hansjörg Schneider (paper sculpture) among others. AANDO FINE ART has ambitious plans for the promotion of its artists and its contribution to the internationalization of the Berlin art scene.

Abnormals Gallery

Mitte

Dear friends,

we’d like to inform you that we’ve decided to finish our art gallery’s activity in Berlin and we are moving to China. The opening of our new amazing art gallery and art club in Shanghai is planned for May. Our space in Berlin will be rented commercially to get an additional financial support for noncommercial projects supported by the Abnormals Foundation.
We hope to see you in Shanghai or elsewhere in the world.

Abnormals Gallery was opened in October 2009. The idea of the gallery started with the concept to offer artists from the abnormals.org community a space for exhibitions and projects. A place were we could create a meeting spot between abnormals.org artist and the normal world. At regular intervals we present solo and group exhibitions, artistic projects, video screenings, readings and musical events. The events have one thing in common, the questions connected with social issues and their exploration. In order to visualize the perspective of the artist on the selected theme, we include them into the curatorial work and are open to their ideas. We see ourselves not just as a regular exhibition space but, more importantly, as a thoughts provoking place for discussion. Apart from abnormals.org, we work together with the publisher nEgoist.

Arndt & Partner

Tiergarten

Matthias Arndt Born in Frankfurt am Main in 1968, Matthias Arndt attended a secondary school specialising in business and completed an apprenticeship with a bank. At the age of 20, however, his interest in art led him to switch fields and become a trainee at the Raab Galerie Berlin/London and the Centre national d´art contemporain Villa Arson in France. While studying Art History and Art Education at the Kassel School of Art and Design, Arndt established his first gallery project from 1990 to 1992, which received the city of Kassel’s Cultural Promotion Award. He also worked as an art educator and visitors’ guide at the documenta IX (under the artistic direction of Jan Hoet). After earning a further degree in Education and Cultural Management at the Hamburg School of Economics and Politics, Matthias Arndt moved to Berlin and founded the gallery Arndt & Partner in 1994. Over the next 15 years, Matthias Arndt organised a total of 200 exhibitions and 70 art fair participations for Arndt & Partner, establishing himself as a pioneering connoisseur of the Berlin art scene and an expert authority in the field of international contemporary art. In his capacity as arts and culture manager, Matthias Arndt founded the company artservices (1997–2001) and managed the guide and visitor support services of the documenta X. He subsequently devised the concept for the Berlin art platform Kunstherbst Berlin, managed the visitor support services for the Expo 2000, and acted as a consultant for the TUI Group responsible for the Expo’s implementation. Again with artservices, Arndt developed the concept for the guide and visitor support services at AUTOSTADT Wolfsburg for the Volkswagen AG. Matthias Arndt lectured at the Berlin Institute for Cultural and Media Management from 1996 to 2004. In 2001, Matthias Arndt was named a “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres” and thus made a member of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture.

Art House Tacheles

Mitte

The History of TACHELES “Tacheles” is an old Jewish word meaning to disclose, to reveal or to speak clearly. The slang meaning of the word was bringing to an end. The Art-Centre Tacheles is situated in a ruin in Berlin Mitte. Located in former East Berlin, the area was a Jewish quarter in the past and has now become a meeting point for people interested in arts and culture and for those who think they are. The building itself was the entrance of the Friedrichstadt-Passage, a huge shopping mall built in 1907. Within a relatively short time, the department store went bankrupt, and in 1928 the house was taken over by AEG, that founded the Haus der Technik, a display and marketing space for their products. In Word War II parts of the building were used by the Nazi Party for administration and organization departments, and in the 5th floor French prisoners of war were detained. Between 1943 and 1945 during the allied air raids the building was hit by bombs several times and got partly damaged, but not completely destroyed. After 1948, one side of the building was still used for many different purposes, but the other side was slowly torn down, step-by-step, as the East Berlin government had no funds to restore it properly and for the distant future they had other plans for this area. So meanwhile, the house became just a storage for building material. The very last structure still standing was planned to be demolished in April 1990. In Febuary 1990 the building was discovered and taken over by a group of young artists from all over the world and in the meantime it has been declared a historical architectural monument, regarding its special steel construction. After the Berlin Wall came down in November 1989, a subculture which had its main focus on autonomy, spontaneity and improvisation arose in the former East Berlin areas Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain. Artists and individualists from all over the world used the plurality of available free spaces to put alternative lifestyles to the test. Due to the individualistic character of the building and the mass of creative activities taking place, the Tacheles soon became famous. Right from the start, Tacheles was a centre of development and realization of individual ways of thinking, of the creative contamination of art and living as well as the testing of artistically and urban ideas. Many international artists staged performances or concerts here, exhibited paintings, sculptures and installations. This essential thought still exists today and the program was even extended further by staging and organizing performances, theatre, various workshops, poetry and special events. During its existence, Tacheles in its function as an international arts centre has greatly influenced and formed the surrounding area in a positive as well as in a negative sense. By now the once creative surrounding area has mutated to a napless trend quarter. Tacheles also attained recognition from the Berlin government and receives a varying amount of subsidy every year in order to help finance a part of its many projects. Other money is raised through commercial enterprises such as the cinema and the bar. Because of its special architecture and the “ruin appearance” of the rearside and due to its 13 years of activities in the international arts field, “Kunsthaus Tacheles” became quite a celebrity on a national and international scale and is also listed in many travel guides of Berlin. In the course of changes since the wall came down, Tacheles has been confronted with the difficult challenge of remaining true to its roots and ideals without becoming too sentimental about the old squatter times.

Art Laboratory Berlin

Wedding

ART LABORATORY BERLIN, a non-profit organisation, was founded in Autumn 2006 as Art Laboratory Berlin e.V, .by an international team of art historians and artists. As a non-commercial art space, ART LABORATORY BERLIN was established as a platform for projects concentrating on the border between visual arts and related artistic and scholarly fields. The main focus of interest is the exhibition and placement of contemporary visual art that interacts with other creative areas, which has already been realized in such exhibition series as "Art and Music", "Art and Text", "Art and Science" and "Art and Law". Each of these points of interaction is represented by a series of three or four diverse exhibitions. Our goal is to explore the manifold approaches of interaction and interconnection between these genres. Our current series Artists in Dialog features projects by two artists whose work shares a common theme, motif or artistic strategy. ART LABORATORY BERLIN is also interested in supporting contact between artists and the public as part of our exhibitions. To improve a better understanding of emerging and experimental art, we include public discussions with artists and curators. Additionally our program provides lectures, film screenings, curator's talks, and workshops. Currently ART LABORATORY BERLIN is run by Christian de Lutz and Regine Rapp.

artSPACE berlin

Mitte

artSPACE berlin gives artists the opportunity to show their art in one of the most exciting art centres in the world. Most of our artists are sourced from our first gallery in Durban, South Africa. artSPACE berlin, which consists of 4 separate spaces, is located in the Mitte area and was founded in 2007. The main aim of the gallery is to show work by artists who are connected to Africa in some way. artSPACE berlin chooses not to proclaim loudly that it shows only art by artists who are strongly affiliated with Africa because we want the viewing public to first see the work, and then discover that the artists have an African connection. Perceptions of African art are changing and artSPACE berlin is a part of this change. The difficulty has been that although the artists have successful careers in Africa, when they show in Europe for the first time, it is an introduction of their work to a new art market, so in a sense they are ‘emerging' artists too. As time goes on, the gallery will again show their work and one will begin to see a pattern of growth in the artist's art making. artSPACE berlin and artSPACE durban give our exhibiting artists a platform on which to exhibit their work and to reach a wider audience in Europe by providing a space in Berlin. We become facilitators in helping make the path a bit easier for the artists to reach new audiences. artSPACE berlin is moving to a different location and re-opening in early 2011. Check back for further information on the new gallery space and upcoming exhibitions!

ATM GALLERY BERLIN

Kreuzberg

ATM operates as a translator and mediator of Art presented in an urban environment. Its aim is to draw attention to the energetic expressions of an international street-art scene. in the space of a gallery. ATM shows a broad selection of art works created by international urban artist and invites its visitors to take part in the visual language of an urban surrounding, instead of leaving it to the street where it can only be acknowledged by some. In monthly changing exhibitions ATM shows different positions of urban, street- and graffiti artists and their impressive varieties of skills. ATM is not interested in taking streetart from the streets and establishing it as an art form in the white cube of contemporary art – instead ATM likes to awaken an awareness and tolerance of the art form. At the same time ATM supports urban artists by helping them to earn money by selling their works which enables them to continue working in the urban space. Next to supporting international projekts ATM mainly concentrates on supporting local groups and artists who work in Berlin at the moment.

Autocenter

Friedrichshain

The independent exhibition space AUTOCENTER was founded in 2001 by the artists Maik Schierloh and Joep van Liefland in an auto body shop as a not-for-profit space for art beyond the hierarchies of the art market. In high frequency and on 333 m2 (3584 sq feet) of exhibition grounds, Autocenter has been inviting international visual artists to present their ideas and visions to an advanced audience of curators, critics, collectors, as well as architects, photographers and galerists in Berlin’s hip district of Friedrichshain. “Showing” here is understood as an non-ideological gesture sans economic pressures. Autocenter is about artistic experimentation in the fields of painting, sculpture, photography, video, etc. beyond the confines of curatorial concern and limitation. Having transcended its status as “off-space” after 10 years and as an antithesis to the regular white cube, Autocenter has assumed a much discussed function within Berlin as it has become “the” platform for showcasing Berlin’s artistic production.

Bongout

Mitte

L’histoire de Bongoût Bongoût is Christian ‘Meeloo” Gfeller and Anna Hellsgård. They produce silkscreen artist books and prints, all of which are hand-made from start to finish. They are also commissioned to do graphic design work for everyone from underground record labels to skateboard brands, from illegal noise concerts to world music festivals, movie productions, corporate clothing companies, and tobacco companies. Christian started Bongoût in 1995, in Strasbourg. The name was inspired by ‘The Cramps” song “You Got Good Taste”. Translating this into French, he cam up with the combination ‘bon goût’. For the first five years, the Bongoût atelier was located in a warehouse in Kehl, the German sister city to Strasbourg, just across the Rhine. Along with several other people, the studio was used as a rehearsal space by bands and a place to hold concerts and parties. Christian met Anna in Berlin, September 11, 2001. At that point, the atelier was relocated to Bor- deaux for one and a half, high production years. In 2004, they moved to Berlin, spending 6 years in a former tanning shop in East Berlin’s Friedrichshain. In 2008 they opened the doors to Bongoût shop and gallery, showcasing original art works, as well as selling books, multiples and prints. This space is considered a place where contemporary art meets graphic, underground art, as well as numerous forms of sound and visual cultures. At this point Bongoût transcended into a public platform for dialogue between artists. At present day, 2010, organization is key, and Bongoût’s graphic design office, silkscreen studio, atelier, gallery and shop are all centrally located in Berlin’s Mitte, Torstr. 110. Le Méchanisme de Bongoût Abstract vs Figurative, Art World vs Underground Bongoût books are usually considered too raw to be contemporary art and too arty to be under- ground. They seem to be in flux between the two, not particularly fitting into any one place. The same applies in the graphic design world. They are not classical graphic designers. The bulk of their imagery comes from hand drawn and printing techniques, which projects a raw, whimsical twist on computer graphics. Most of the collaborative silkscreen books have a cross-bread of abstract and figurative draw- ings in them. The images are never obvious representations, and are not too easily understood. Thoughtful time is required to look into each page and appreciate each book. It can be difficult, in the sense that most people like to put things into separate boxes, so they can easily recognize what it is. A self-gratification results from this. With Bongoût books however, people do not know how to react, there is no box to fit them in to. It is uncharted territory, and Bongoût is leading the expedition. All books and posters are printed in limited editions, usually somewhere between 50 and 180 ex. Nothing is, or ever will be reprinted. This holds no interest to Bongoût, as they are already on to the next project.

Dada Post

Reinickendorf

Dada Post was founded in 2008 on the initiative of Howard McCalebb, a sculptor and active figure on the international art scene. It is located in the in the Berlin-Reinickendorf district, in the former König Smoked Fish Factory complex. The one hundred year-old business was transformed into exhibition, performance, and studio spaces for artists. The gallery itself comprises two major spaces. The adjacent out- and indoor sites have also been designated for exhibition purposes, including The cooler. The renovation and redesign of the complex took both its history and the demands of contemporary art into consideration. The facility is easily recognizable by its large smokestacks, which recall the slants of the gallery logo, and have been retained as a reference to the original commercial use of the site. Eager to contribute to Berlin's cultural and intellectual life, Dada Post is also building a program of films, readings, music, and other live performances between art exhibitions.

Deutscher Künstlerbund

Mitte

The Deutscher Künstlerbund between tradition and future As a forum for the avant-garde the Deutscher Künstlerbund (Association of German Artists) was founded in 1903 on the initiative of Harry Graf Kessler, promoter of arts and artists, Lovis Corinth, Max Liebermann, Alfred Lichtwark and Max Slevogt among others in Weimar. After its liquidation by the National Socialists in 1936 it was re-established in 1950 by the artists Willi Baumeister, Karl Hofer, Ewald Matré and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff in Berlin. Today about 550 renowned visual artists are members of the association. Since its foundation, the Deutscher Künstlerbund – at the beginning still in the position of a pioneer – has competently and dedicatedly assumed politico-cultural duties and responsibilities in our society. It perceives itself as an association of visual artists, who commit themselves to the protection of their members’ interests while respecting each other’s work. The members of the Künstlerbund cooperate in national and international governmental committees, boards of curators and panels which play an advisory role in the debating of legislative regulations. In the meantime, many of the initiatives of the Deutscher Künstlerbund have established themselves as a matter of course in the cultural everyday life such as the institution of the social security fund for artists. The Deutscher Künstlerbund regards itself as a vibrant place of artistic debate and critical discourse. Its project space in Berlin provides an attractive platform for the discussion of current questions and contemporary positions. The Deutscher Künstlerbund stands up for the continuance of artistic license as an indispensable foundation for further cultural development and for a vigorous position of art and artists in society.

Emerson Gallery

Mitte

In autumn 2003 EMERSON Gallery Berlin opened its doors for the first time to present contemporary art exhibits in Berlin’s upstart “Mitte” district. In the heart of the city, in the extended gallery location “MitteNord“ between Torstraße and Invalidenstraße, EMERSON Gallery Berlin will offer new art with particular emphasis on artist positions to social issues. The gallery’s director, Russell Radzinski, is a former New Yorker who has put together a Berlin team to discover new directions in art by primarily younger artists. The gallery’s program is not constrained by attention to any particular artistic medium, rather, the common denominator is strong artistic expression with a focus on art’s standpoint to contemporary society. Exhibits are to be supplemented with a cultural program consisting of related literary readings, performances and roundtable discussions designed to encourage a dialogue with gallery visitors. Through these accompanying events the art exhibited is meant to be actively discussed and not simply viewed or consumed passively.

From now on the Fasanen Gallery will display art online and close the showroom in the Fasanenstrasse in Berlin Charlottenburg. The Gallery first opened its doors in 2006, and since then presented a number of exhibitions which attracted people from all over the world, and thus made the gallery internationally known. Sales and interest from outside Berlin and from abroad have increased gradually. As a consequence, consultations and negotiations do often take place via e-mail. In regard to this development the question arose whether an extension of the premises would be worthwhile. After much deliberation, the Fasanen Gallery decided to offer the art online as well as the details necessary for an informed decision. The viewing of the art can be arranged for you at a suitable time and place or at our office in the Knesebeck Street in Berlin Charlottenburg. Spread over four stories in a European style former residence in Shanghai's historic French Concession, FELLINI's exceptional location and dynamic roster of artists quickly brought it to the attention of the international art scene. GALERIAPLAN B

Tiergarten

Plan B opened in September 2005 in Cluj, the main city of the Romanian province of Transylvania. Initiated by Mihai Pop and Adrian Ghenie, Plan B functions as a production space for contemporary art; at the same time it is a research center focusing on the Romanian art of the last 50 years, by revealing works of remarkable artists without previous international exposure. The name of the gallery—Plan B—is a reference to the general situation of art spaces in Romania: as these are mostly reliant on insufficient public resources, the 'plan B' fallback is animated by individual involvement, a different understanding of the institutional and a coherent managerial policy. Plan B was the organizer of the Romanian pavilion at the 52nd Venice Biennale, 2007. In September 2008 Plan B opened a permanent gallery in Berlin. The new 260 sqm exhibition space is located in a former 20th century industrial building, on Heidestrasse 50. Plan B Berlin is a project by Mihai Pop and Mihaela Lutea. The gallery is participating in several art fairs, such as The Armory Show New York, Viennafair, LISTE Basel, Art Forum Berlin and Frieze Art Fair London.

Galerie Berlin - Küttner & Ebert GmbH

Mitte

Galerie Christian Ehrentraut

Mitte

Gallerist Christian Ehrentraut has been working in the Berlin art scene for years, starting at the renowned EIGEN+ART and later heading the artist-run LIGA Gallery which catapulted several painters from the so-called New Leipzig School to early fame. In 2005, Ehrentraut opened his first commercial gallery on Brunnenstrasse, then ran a salon-style space from his home in 2007 and 2008. In early 2009, the latest incarnation of Galerie Christian Ehrentraut opened on a spacious courtyard space on Friedrichstrasse. Still representing a number of LIGA artists, the gallery exhibits primarily two-dimensional work, widening it's roster to installation and sculpture and International artists such as Canadian Shannon Finley and Tel Aviv-based Anan Tzukerman. The Gallery published numerous artist books in cooperation with LUBOK Verlag (www.lubok.de), publisher of original graphic picture books, that was founded by artist Christoph Ruckhaberle in 2007, among them publications accompanying exhibitions by Shannon Finley (2010) , Franziska Holstein, Stephanie Dost and Ruprecht von Kaufmann (all 2009). Galerie Christian Nagel

Mitte

On April 30th Galerie Christian Nagel will celebrate its 20th anniversary. Founded in Cologne in 1990 the gallery has represented and attended artists whose works show developed social and political positions, compellingly expressed with a distinctive aesthetic language. The opening exhibition in Cologne was also Cosima von Bonin’s first solo show. After that we welcomed Michael Krebber, Joseph Zehrer, Christian Philipp Müller, Andrea Fraser, Hans-Jörg Mayer, Heimo Zobernig, Mark Dion, Renée Green, Clegg & Guttmann, Stephan Dillemuth, Kai Althoff, Josephine Pryde, Merlin Carpenter, Catherine Sullivan and John Miller. Together with Martha Rosler, Adrian Piper and Stephan Willats, Galerie Christian Nagel represents groundbreaking conceptual art positions with strategies reaching back to the 1960s. A younger generation, including Stephanie Taylor, Kalin Lindena, Stefan Müller, Cornelius Quabeck, Jan Timme, Lutz Braun, Sven Johne, Rachel Harrison and Michael Beutler, came after the 2002 opening of the new space on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin. Gang Zhao, Peking/ New York and Kader Attia, Paris/Algeria are artists of bilateral heritage who reflect on canonized Western positions from a trans- cultural perspective. In our gallery work we always saw it as important to recognise and support the next generation. Finally with Hanna Schwarz, Julia Horstmann, Mirjam Thomann and Lone Haugaard Madsen, Kathryn Andrews, Keren Cytter, Dominik Sittig and Xavier Mary our gallery program was enriched with important young artists of the present. The 2000s have brought what appears to be a widespread, growing inclination towards art as a market commodity. As in the beginning, we prefer to support artistic positions that invigorate and visualize the critical potential inherent in tensions between politics and aesthetics, content and form, work and context. In may 2010 we will open a new space in the city of Antwerp, an important location in the history of avantgarde art. Galerie Christian Nagel handles the Ingeborg Gabriel and Jörg Schlick estates.

Galerie Crone

Kreuzberg

Ascan Crone Gallery was founded 1982 in Hamburg by Ascan Crone and Mechthild von Dannenberg. In 1998 their long time business partner Andreas Osarek took over the gallery and changed the name into Crone Gallery. From the beginning the gallery program focussed on international contemporary art. Since Andreas Osarek is in charge of the program, the acquisition of young artists reshaped the gallery profile. Again the gallery has become an important contributor to the present day artistic discourse. From October 2001 on Crone Gallery operated both in Hamburg and Berlin, where it is located in Kochstraße 60 — in close vicinity to other internationally reknown galleries and to the famous Friedrichstraße. What started out as the Berlin branch of Crone Gallery, has now become its main office and exhibition space. In 2004 the Hamburg location was closed. At the same time Crone Gallery doubled its exhibition space in Berlin. The large storefront linked with the previous exhibition space now serves to display the established artists of the gallery, whereas the intimate situation of the backroom offers the opportunity for more experimental approaches and younger artists.

Galerie Deschler

Mitte

The Galerie Deschler opened its space in a carefully restored late 19th-century building in 1995. It is located in renowned Auguststrasse in Berlin’s Mitte district, right in the heart of Berlin’s dynamic new gallery scene. The gallery is very active in art community and as a member of LVBG (State Association of Berlin Galleries).

The gallery supports young and experimental positions of contemporary art, presenting to the public pioneering approaches in the areas of painting, sculpture, objects, and new media. Its focus is on figurative art and tech- nically innovative explorations of artistic traditions. Important examples of this approach are Stefan Roloff’s digital morphing of photographs in his portrait series, Tony Conway’s inventive use of digital photography to cre- ate multi-layered pictures with a sculptural presence, Christian Roeck's rendering of after-images in his interactive RETINA PROJECT, as well as Holger Bär’s use of a painting robot developed by himself. An ironic use and play with the forms of traditional craftsmanship are a prominent feature in KEHL’s lacquered wood sculptures based on popular woodcraft figures from the German Erzgebirge region, in Patricia Waller’s bewildering world of whimsical objects made of crochet work, in Hans van Meeuwen’s un- usual view of everyday objects, and in Wolfram Odin’s combination of wall- paper patterns and personal ads in his wallpaper installations. More estab- lished positions represented by the gallery include Xenia Hausner’s combi- nations of painting, photography and collage, Elvira Bach’s paintings of strong women, as well as Rainer Fetting’s gesturally-expressive paintings. The gallery has an international scope and currently represents artists from many different countries, including Germany, the US, Holland, Denmark, Austria, Chile, and Argentina.

In its exhibition policy, the gallery does not dogmatically cling to a rigid structure. Rather, it deliberately seeks out crucial breaks in contemporary art that reflect its multifaceted variety in a complex period characterized by ceaseless change. Shows in the past have often included installations, vi- deo works, and collaborative projects. The gallery’s yearly “Curious” show presents unusual and experimental positions in contemporary sculpture and object-making.

The gallery is very active in organizing and supporting international art pro- jects, in participating in national and international art fairs, and in producing publications.

***************

Galerie EIGEN + ART

Mitte

Galerie EIGEN + ART with locations in Leipzig and Berlin represents established and young artists who work in media such as film/video, photography, installation, painting and sculpture as well as conceptual art and performance. Therefore the gallery's program is dedicated to different fields of contemporary art. Galerie EIGEN + ART emerged in the year 1983 as an unofficial gallery project in the private loft of Gerd Harry Lybke at Körnerplatz in Leipzig. Artists who were proactive out of the government doctrine presented the forbidden and therefore illegal exhibitions. The constant professionalisation of that impulsive project allowed an on-going exhibition activity and the creation of a distinctive image of the artistic programs already early. A number of the artists that the gallery represents today are part of the program since these first exhibition projects. Advanced into a central and national venue, Galerie EIGEN + ART expanded in spaces of a former studio in the Fritz-Austel-Straße in 1985. Until the end of the 1980's Galerie EIGEN + ART also obtained international attention, especially by the traditional fair in Leipzig, which allowed the west a free entry into the GDR twice a year. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and in the course of the new political conditions in the FRG since 1989, Galerie EIGEN + ART followed the plan to take position with temporary gallery spaces directly on-site in the international art capitals. Galerie EIGEN + ART started with these temporary gallery spaces in 1990 in Tokyo, followed by stations in Paris in 1991, Berlin in 1992, New York in 1993 and London in 1994. Since 1991 Galerie EIGEN + ART participates in the important international art fairs in New York, Basel, Berlin, London and Miami. Since the beginning the gallery presents its artists on established concepts, for example solo presentations in New York and London or a broad range of the whole program in Berlin, Miami and Basel. Out of a temporary project back then in the just founded Kunst-Werke in Berlin, today's location of Galerie EIGEN + ART developed in 1992 in Auguststraße in Berlin-Mitte. Both locations of Galerie EIGEN + ART in Leipzig and Berlin reflect the processual structures of the gallery's history. As the factory hall on the grounds of the Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei, to which the gallery moved in 2005, provides room for generously arranged exhibitions, the gallery in Berlin realises more concentrated forms of presentation. Since its foundation Galerie EIGEN + ART works continually with a solid number of artists. By the permanent cooperation with the artists, the gallery is involved in the steady development of each artistic position and therefore involved in the current art events since it's beginning. The centre and the origin of the gallery's business are the represented artists and the development of their artistic work. Furthermore the program is complemented with several new artistic positions at a time after long processes. Referring to the time of Galerie EIGEN + ART's foundation, group exhibitions of young artists that are not an inherent part of the gallery's program are shown in regular terms. The artists represented by Galerie EIGEN + ART work in different areas of fine art as well as in an already established environments and at the beginning of artistic constitutions. Galerie EIGEN + ART represents: Akos Birkas, Birgit Brenner, Martin Eder, Tim Eitel, Nina Fischer/Maroan el Sani, Stella Hamberg, Christine Hill, Jörg Herold, Uwe Kowski, Rémy Markowitsch, Maix Mayer, Carsten Nicolai, Olaf Nicolai, Neo Rauch, Ricarda Roggan, Yehudit Sasportas, David Schnell, Annelies Strba, Matthias Weischer.

Galerie Isabella Czarnowska

Kreuzberg

For 25 years Galerie Isabella Czarnowska has played an important role in introducing exceptional contemporary artists to Western European audiences.
In the early days of the gallery, which was founded as Galerie Isabella Kacprzak in Stuttgart in 1986 and relocated to Cologne in 1989, comprehensive monographic exhibitions were given to American artists who were at that time virtually unknown in Europe: Allan McCollum, Louise Lawler and Richard Prince were among those presented here at an early stage of their careers. In Cologne, two outstanding painters joined the gallery – South African-born Marlene Dumas and Luc Tuymans from Belgium. The Polish sculptor Miroslaw Balka also had his first German exhibition here in 1991. Following the significant shift in the geopolitical situation in Central Europe, the gallery moved to Berlin in the mid-1990s. Among the many individual and group exhibitions that have been held here since then, two major exhibitions in 2007 and 2009 focussed on the work of the forgotten Polish sculptor Alina Szapocznikow.
While continuing to work with established international artists, Galerie Isabella Czarnowska places great emphasis on fostering the careers of young and emerging talents. The artists represented receive the full support of the gallery, whether they are mounting an exhibition in our space or preparing shows and publications with museums or other art institutions. Galerie Isabella Czarnowska also publishes its own exhibition catalogues and monographs. From 1986 to 2003 the gallery operated under the names “Isabella Kacprzak” and “Galerie Isabella Kacprzak”. From 2006 onwards this changed to “Galerie Isabella Czarnowska (formerly Kacprzak)”, and since the beginning of 2011 the gallery name has been “Galerie Isabella Czarnowska”.

Galerie Jarmuschek + Partner

Tiergarten

What started out in the year 2000 as an exhibition project instigated by art historians at Sophienstrasse 18 in Berlin-Mitte rapidly developed into a gallery known for its innovative spirit. Since that time, Kristian Jarmuschek and Stefan Trinks have displayed an unerring ability to identify incisive trends, setting out a comprehensive program that covers all genres. The artists that they have chosen to represent deal with the complex link between reality and its medial disseminations as well as the consequences that this fusion of reality and its reproductions have on the creation of images. Complex positions such as these require assiduous placement work by the gallery. Jarmuschek + Partner's extensive range of contacts and networks create widespread awareness for the work of their artists and make sure that their work is properly disseminated in the market. When the gallery founded Preview Berlin in the old Tempelhof airport along with five other Berlin galleries, they created a platform that is dedicated to raising awareness of emerging art and is now considered an important supplement to the established Art Forum. The gallery's presence in the international scene is fairly recent and includes participation in the Year_06 Art Project in London and the promising Swab Art Fair in Barcelona in 2008 as well as the VOLTA show in New York in 2009. The gallery's decision to move its premises into a former warehouse situated in the new gallery area behind the Hamburger Bahnhof-Museum for Contemporary Art, where they opened their doors in spring 2008, is a decision that portends equal benefits.

Along with the Norwegian and international artists it represents, the gallery also regularly shows work by renowned guest artists such as Ulrich Rückriem and Spencer Finch. It also instigates projects in public spaces with, for example, Anthony Gormley. In 2007 Galerie Opdahl opened its Berlin dependency in the gallery complex at Lindenstrasse 35, where, along with Norwegian work and established artists such as Jimmie Durham, it predominantly shows emerging international artists such as Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson, who have just been selected to represent Iceland at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011. A major focus of the gallery’s activity is integrating artists into the Berlin and international art scenes. To this end, and in parallel with the solo and group exhibitions, the so-called studio picks are presented in the showroom as an opportunity for international curators, authors and artists living in Berlin to suggest work of their own choosing.

galerie son galerie son wants to contribute with its work to a cross-cultural art dialogue, especially between Europe and Asia, and aims to show art to the public also outside its location, in unusual places and at special events, believing that art has ethical and political power. history galerie son was founded in August 2005 in the Linienstraße in Berlin-Mitte by the art historian and publisher Mihyun SON. galerie son considers itself a new impulse in the culture of galleries and makes a contribution to the international dialogue of art - especially between Europe and Asia. We represent international artists from Korea, Germany, Italy, Japan, France and the USA. Beside exhibitions in our gallery space, we develop our artists and work intensively for projects at special places and special events, such as the exhibition "Light" at the New Kranzler Eck 2006, the event "schlitzaugen / slit-eyes" as part of the Asia Pacific Weeks Berlin 2007, the "Dialogue between Gerhard Richter and Junggeun Oh" in 2007 and the "Dialogue between Antony Gormley and BjĂśrn Borgmann" in 2009 in the rooms of the Sammlung Hoffmann Berlin, the exhibition "Art from Korea and Germany" in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and an International Art Project 2007-2009 in cooperation with the Berlin Wall Memorial, where artists from China, Russia, Germany and Korea created large artworks in the former death strip between East and West Berlin at the Bernauer Straße. In 2008 galerie son went to the Wallstraße - the origin and birthplace of the City of Berlin. In that year the galerie son and KĂśnigliche Porzellan Manufaktur (KPM) started a project together where artists chosen by the gallery created artworks made of KPM porcelain. These days we are planning international exhibitions for the presentation of the KPM artworks. In August 2008 we organized the exhibition "once upon a time" by Johannes HEISIG as a cooperation with the Berlin Wall Memorial and the Berlin Press Conference in the Berlin House of Representatives. The public reactions were huge. The Cultural Ministry of Buenos Aires intends to present the exhibition in Argentina. After this we showed ELSNER's "self injuries" and “border injuries" - historically important works that had not been seen for 20 years and that also were presented in the Museum of the City of Berlin last year. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall ELSNERs artworks were seen together with the works of Johannes HEISIG and Junggeun OH in the exhibition "3 berliner" in the German Embassy in London as part of the VIP program of the FRIEZE ART FAIR 2009. Eduard Habicher and his 'red thread at the harbour' (Der Rote Faden am Hafen) drawn by red sculptures made of steel can still be visited on Berlin's Fischerinsel along the canal of the spree and in the Wallhoefe. In spring 2011 galerie son moved to Mauerstraße, right around the corner from Checkpoint Charlie, and started a thorough cooperation with THE PAGE GALLERY in Seoul for their solo exhibition of the American expressionist painter Sam FRANCIS.

Galerie Thomas Schulte

Mitte

Galerie Thomas Schulte—until 2000 Galerie Franck + Schulte—was one of the first galleries to open in Berlin after reunification. The gallery’s very first exhibition with the "Chor der Heuschrecken" of Rebecca Horn in April 1991 already received a good deal of attention among both the critics and the general public. The gallery quickly advanced to become one of the leading international locations for contemporary art in Germany, showing positions never before on view in Berlin, including artists such as Richard Artschwager, Alighiero Boetti, Magdalena Jetelová, Sol LeWitt, Allan McCollum, Pat Steir, and Robert Mapplethorpe. Since the beginning, the gallery has focused on classical conceptual art along with contemporary conceptual positions and the immanent discourse on the form and value of artistic work. Never merely following current market trends, Galerie Thomas Schulte is instead interested in representing artists of unmistakable quality, artists who in turn influence the thought and work of other artists. Thomas Schulte showed this once more early this year with an exhibition of drawings by Stephen Willats. The gallerist and artist undertook in over twenty five years—and for the first time in Germany—the experiment of presenting a selection of over 30 drawings that all point to social experiences, movements, and studies, but in the gallery refused all reference. The result, as the art critic Gerrit Gohlke wrote, was an almost museum-like exhibition that "made Stephen Willats, the specialist in cybernetics diagrams, social interaction, and the experimental critique of the role of the artist into a kind of minimalist of pure form." Artists like Stephen Willats, Richard Deacon, Jonathan Lasker, Allan McCollum, Robert Mapplethorpe, Gordon Matta-Clark, and Juan Uslé define the gallery program with its focus on conceptual positions. These key figures in the history of contemporary art from the generation of artists now over fifty are complemented by more recent positions like those of Mark Francis, Fabian Marcaccio, Bernhard Martin, and Peter Rogiers, as well as young artists such as Idris Khan, Jacco Olivier, and Iris Schomaker. Galerie Thomas Schulte has participated in Art Basel for many years now, and is a regular guest at Art Basel Miami Beach, Madrid’s ARCO, and The Armory Show in New York.

Georgia Berlin Galerie

Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf

The Berlin Gallerist Annelie Hillmer has specialized on Georgian Art for more than ten years. In her Gallery in Berlin Charlottenburg she continues the close relationship between both countries which has its origin in the 19 century. Berlin always had a magical attraction on Georgian intellectuals and artists. There also was a huge interest on Georgian Art from this side and so in the 1970s and 1980s already it was celebrated as the expression of beauty, mystic and artistic power, which left one longing for the distant country in the Caucasus region. The Gallery presents an exclusive artist, Zaza Tuschmalivili , who came to Berlin in the early 90s. By now he is one of the most popular and important Georgian temporary artists. Here he evolved his distinctive picture language: Iconographical elements of the religious Christian painting , fusioned with Cubism and Surrealism forms. In warm colors and artful techniques the native Georgian home becomes just as comprehensible as his immersion into the modern Western painting.

Hengesbach Gallery

Kreuzberg

The Hengesbach Gallery was founded 1991 in Wuppertal by Rolf Hengesbach under the name Räume für neue Kunst. It developed out of the necessity to create concentrated art-experiences through a close cooperation with the artists. On February 7th 1992 the gallery oepend the first exhibition. In 2002 the Gallery moved to Cologne, in Summer 2009 it opened the current space in Berlin at Checkpoint Charlie. In Wuppertal the gallery still runs a dependance named Kunstraum Hengesbach.

The gallery owns ideal exhibition conditions after an extensive modification, which recovered the original character of the industrial hall. The puristic straightness of the gallery space offers sufficient free space for a divers gallery program with a focus on painting and photography, as well as sculpture and media art. The Charlottenstreet houses several other galleries which are one of the centres for Contemporary Art in Berlin.

A close co-operation with public museums and exhibition-places has developed over 20 years. Texts have been written together with high quality catalogue publications. The gallery program doesn't follow any special artistic directions. Regardless of artistic media or form, the program accentuates in focusing on the aesthetical virtuosity to express the complexity of nowadays life.

******************

Infantellina Contemporary

Mitte

Infantellina Contemporary opened on October 18th, 2008 and is located at Gendarmenmarkt, the elegant district in the heart of Berlin. The gallery's aim is to bring a warm South-European sunray into Berlin's art scene. I-C ist the first one and only Berlin gallery featuring 100% Italian contemporary art. In our comprehensive and selective exhibition program, we offer to an international audience, a selection of artworks by young established artists as well as new up and coming talents, active in different media, with an eye for experimentation. I-C has, moreover, the ambition to foster the artists' wish to bring forth fresh and contemporary concepts capable of both challenging the spectator emotionally, and supplying interesting impulses - or merely visual satisfaction - so as to showcase the fine products of the Italian art scene. In the city that - in the last few years - has arguably become the symbol of the contemporary art scene, Infantellina Contemporary wishes to represent a cluster for all lovers of Italian art. Thanks to I-C, the Italian art tradition and the city of Berlin come to merge into an explosive mixture. Infantellina Contemporary [ I ][C] is a gallery born from the requirement of the owner, P. Charlotte Stein-Infantellina, of having a real exposition space, creating a platform to carry foreward a positive message, through the choice of the artists and the selection of the works, stimulating the active interaction with collectors, attaché’s to the activities, institutions and artists also. Infantellina Contemporary [ I ][C] gushes from the star of the aesthetic and organizational flexibility; the departure point consists in proposing, nearly exclusively, young even if asserted, Italian artists and a selection of emergent Italian talents, spacing between the several artistic techniques, and additionally one or two special-guests with international provenance. Infantellina Contemporary [ I ][C] has the ambition, being the birthplace of tomorrows stars, to give them a chance to be able to explain fresh and contemporary concepts that can involve the spectator emotionally, supplying reflection cues and - on the other hand - just simple visual satisfaction. Having a vision projected towards the future rather than to describe plans realized in past, we prefer to invite you to estimate personally, and hope you’ll follow us in this different adventure and maybe the next artist on his way to the Olymp.

Invaliden1

Mitte

Imagine this scenario: 6 artists gathered in a studio, each with his own distinctly individual voice, practice and unique aesthetic viewpoint. They sit around talking, debating ideas, smoking and joking from time to time. Today's meeting, like many others that have taken place before, centres on a common goal; primarily to stretch the spatial and critical parameters not just of their own art production, but that of an international community of producers based in, or passing through the city of Berlin. Galerie Invaliden1 is the collaborative product of these 6 Berlin-based artists' creative energies: Sergio Belinchón, Rui Calçada Bastos, Paul Ekaitz, Antonio Mesones, Noé Sendas and Santiago Ydáñez. In the early days of the gallery's founding in 2005, the artists had been quick to identify and respond to a lacuna in the local artistic and socio-economic infrastructure of Berlin. Owing to the availability of affordable studio and living space, alongside a vibrant and growing population of creatives, Berlin was then already being purported as a thriving new "mecca" for international art production. The city was nonetheless already beginning to exhibit the same symptoms that have long persisted in other global art cities such as New York, London or Paris. Gaps appear between the realization of new or experimental ideas, the achievement of a degree of external validation and visibility in the art world, and the attainment of financial as well as commercial sustainability. Establishing an artist-run gallery was thus a natural reflex for the 6 who sought to actively address such gaps or systemic failures. Galleries outside of Berlin are already representing all the artists, but Invaliden1 provides a means by which to assert their presence locally. Beyond serving a basic need for self-representation, however, the artists' have also jointly created a viable, community-oriented alternative model to ‘non-profit', ‘commercial' and ‘institutional' modes of organisation. In place of rigid and impersonal bureaucracies, this model retains a flexible framework and largely relational modus operandi by which artists and curators are personally invited by the artists to exhibit. There is freedom for mutual exchange, experimental collaboration and reflexive dialogue amongst practitioners, for practitioners. The self-contained model is hard-pressed neither by hierarchical organisational structures nor state-funding agendas. It remains considerably immune to market fluctuations. A show will go on as long as an artist wills it to. Since its inception, the gallery's programmatic growth has attested to the surprising effectiveness of their approach. The 6 artists and their gallery have hosted numerous installations by other artists of international repute and stature. The exhibition space has gained pace and influence as one of Berlin's potentially most watchable and talked-about artist-run projects. Bearing additional testament to its success is Invaliden1's survival along the increasing gentrified Brunnenstrasse district, where most galleries seem to appear and disappear barely before making a mark. The space continues to evolve in dynamism as an increasing number of art producers and audiences alike feed into the creation and engagement of its content. The effect that the Invaliden1 artists have produced resounds much more than the existence and sustenance of a gallery space. Their joint effort has proved to be a cooperative gesture, a demonstrable artistic intervention that has made a real impact on the landscape in which they live and work, multiplying its creative possibilities and imaginative elasticity way beyond an initiative started by just 6 artists. This site provides a timely profile that celebrates and documents their work as their individual practices continue to deepen alongside the widening consciousness of Invaliden1.

Janinebeangallery

Mitte

The janinebeangallery, founded in 2004, is dedicated to the support of young contemporary art, primarily of artists living and working in Berlin. The gallery emphasizes the long-termed, concentrated development of young talents, a concept which limits the number of represented artists accordingly. The janinebeangallery maintains the backing of its artists through every day assistances exceeding the conventional gallery work. Guest artists are continuously featured in group exhibitions, where their works complement or extent the subject. Along with one-time exhibition themes the gallery is organizing international exhibition-projects with various international artists. This is currently in particular the case for the exhibition-project called Fairytale of Berlin.

JORDAN / SEYDOUX

Mitte

Amélie Seydoux and Bernard Jordan have opened an art gallery specializing in limited editions and drawings in Berlin-Mitte in May 2008.

A web designer, Amélie Seydoux has worked for over 10 years with Eric Seydoux, a renowned silkscreen printmaker and publisher in Paris. She is very well versed in both the publishing scene and printing techniques.

Bernard Jordan has held a Parisian gallery in Paris for over 20 years. For many years he has consecrated a part of his exhibition space to prints and multiples, working with French and foreign publishers. In 2008 he launched a second space in Zurich where a part of the exhibition room is dedicated to drawings.

Jordan and Seydoux’s wish to be partners arose from their mutual attachment to original limited editions, that allow artists the possibility to create original art work that they could not otherwise do. Those original art works are the result of a close and subtile collaboration between the artist and the printmaker. The number of prints for such editions is usually rather small (10 to 40), and their prices are affordable.

In their gallery, Amélie Seydoux and Bernard Jordan propose a selection of original prints and multiples by international artists, coming from the best publishers. The gallery alternate between presenting collective and one-man shows, as well as drawing exhibitions.

Since october 2009 the Gallery Jordan / Seydoux is also publisher. The first edition was made with berliner artist Frank BADUR, a series of 6 woodcuts printed by Tabor Presse Berlin. In January 2011 the Gallery presented its second edition, 2 big lithographies from french artist Françoise PÉTROVITCH printed by Tabor Presse Berlin. Its third edition, Recso-Verto 0°, 25°, 45°, is a series of three screen prints by François MORELLET published on the occasion of the second solo show of the artist in the Gallery (Spring 2011). Printed on both side on a thick translucent material they were produced in Paris by Atelier Eric Seydoux. The Gallerys latest edition, Rosa et/und Jules by french artist Pierre BURAGLIO, is a series of 10 unique lithographs. Printed on various paper types by Atelier Auger in Paris, each one has been afterwards reworked by the artist in his studio (collage, assemblage, colored pencils,...).
***********************************

Kicken Berlin

Mitte

The Kicken Gallery has its origins in Aachen, Germany where Rudolf Kicken and Wilhelm Schürmann opened the "Galerie Lichttropfen" (Drops of Light Gallery) in 1974. The start of Kicken's career as gallery owner nearly thirty years ago heralded the beginning of an unprecedented engagement for the photographic medium in Germany. In 1979, the gallery moved to Cologne, without the former partner, and began operating under the name Kicken. During the Cologne years, kicken became the leading gallery for art photography in Germany. Since autumn 2000, Rudolf Kicken and his wife Annette run the gallery together in Berlin. The Berlin domicile at Linienstrasse 161A, in the heart of the capital city's gallery disctrict, is home to spacious exhibitions rooms and a library which invites the curious to delve more deeply into the field of photography. Until 2010, Kicken Berlin has run an exhibition space at Linienstrasse 155 which has been designed by J. MAYER H. architects into a flexible walk-in installation way beyond the usual static white cube, allowing exciting new art presentation possibilities. Now at the same place our showroom kicken II provides a preview and a display of our current exhibition activities at the main gallery location at Linienstrasse 161A. One of Gallery Kicken's strength is its variety. represented are nearly all the great names in art photography from the beginning of the 19th century to the present. The main focus is on the 20th century, especially on the German and Czech avant-garde of the 1920's and 1930's, including Bauhaus and the great masters of the genre: Man Ray, moholy-Nagy and Rodchenko. "Subjective Photographie" (Subjective Photography) from the 1950's, contemporary fashion photography and current conceptual positioning also figure prominentaly in the gallery's work. Especially in the case of conceptual photography have finally been eliminated. Overcoming these borders and discovery of new or until now neglected photographic imagery has always been at the heart of Gallery Kicken's work. Along with the stars of photography's history, anonymous or unusual snapshots have place in the gallery's program. Furthermore, many well-known photographers such as Helmut Newton or Umbo, first gained recognition on the international art market through the efforts of Gallery Kicken. The gallery mounts four large exhibitions per year of museum quality. Gallery Kicken regularly participates in the most important international art fairs, and its presence contributes considerably to maintaining photography's important position in the world. A special focus is the preservation and presentation of the material from the estates of Ed van der Elsken, Heinrich Kühn, Rudolph Koppitz, Anton Josef Trcka, Umbo and many others. As one of the leading galleries for art photography worldwide, Gallery Kicken is committed to the preservation and development of visual culture

Konrad Fischer Galerie

Kreuzberg

When Konrad Fischer opened a tiny exhibition space in a disused alley in the centre of Düsseldorf with a first exhibition by Carl Andre in October 1967, Minimal or Conceptual Art were hardly known in Europe. Many artists of that period such as Richard Long, Bruce Nauman, Sol LeWitt, On Kawara, Lawrence Weiner, Hanne Darboven, Robert Ryman, for example, had their first solo exhibitions in Europe at “Ausstellungen bei Konrad Fischer“, and have continued to exhibit at the gallery regularly up to the present day. Fischer’s prime objective was to invite the artists to Düsseldorf rather than to just have their works presented there. This – at the time unknown approach – enabled the creation of an international network of artists and has provided the ground for the development of site-specific sculptures, painting and installations. Daniel Buren introduced his interventions into gallery space, Gilbert & George found a platform to perform as “Singing Sculpture”, Wolfgang Laib installed sculptures from beeswax and pollen. New conceptual approaches in painting that can be found in the work of Robert Mangold and Alan Charlton have been on show. In conceptual photography Bernd and Hilla Becher and Jan Dibbets revived the scene. And the Arte Povera artists like Giuseppe Penone, Giovanni Anselmo, Mario Merz and Jannis Kounellis introduced a new interplay between art and nature. During the 1980s, the gallery’s programming was widened to include the work of artists who tried out new ways in contemporary art – Thomas Schütte, Harald Klingelhöller, Helmut Dorner, Tony Cragg. In painting new positions like those of Helmut Dorner and Jerry Zeniuk join the gallery. Besides continuing the gallery’s close collaboration with artists of long standing, Konrad Fischer Gallery also exhibits artists on a regular basis, such as Gregor Schneider, Manfred Pernice, Jim Lambie, Paloma Varga Weisz, Magnus Plessen, Matthew Buckingham, Guy Ben-Ner and Wolfgang Plöger. In Fall 2007 we opened a second gallery space in Berlin. Along with younger artists from the international contemporary art scene Konrad Fischer Galerie Berlin presents a program referring to forty years of gallery history.

Kunsthalle Koidl

Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf

Kunsthalle Koidl is a not-for-profit private limited company and serves as a platform to showcase exhibitions of outstanding private collections with an international outlook, emphasising the curatorial quality of renowned collections of contemporary art and classical modern art. Kunsthalle Koidl portrays the active role of the collector and the growing influence that collectors have on the development of the art market. In addition to presentations of specific collections, exhibitions of one outstanding artist, with contributions from various collectors, enable a retrospective from the buyer’s point of view. At Kunsthalle Koidl, the collectors themselves are involved in the conceptual design of the exhibitions, in collaboration with their consultants and curators and the staff at Kunsthalle Koidl in order to realise their show. Architecture Entrepreneur Roman Maria Koidl created the exhibition space in a historical transformer station in Berlin Charlottenburg on his own initiative. This exceptional freestanding hall was built in BAUHAUS style by Richard Brademann in 1928. In 2006, Roman Maria Koidl started restoration work on the abandoned building and converted it into a small exhibition hall. The outside of the building has retained its original form. The interior presents itself as a rectangular hall, which can be divided into smaller sections.C

Künstlerhaus Bethanien

Kreuzberg

Our Program and the Way We Work A Center for Services Künstlerhaus Bethanien is a service enterprise whose goal is to further contemporary art and contemporary artists. It is responsible for the lodging and assistance of international guests; for offering advice in general questions concerning art and its practical issues; for the running of the workshops; for the planning and realization of its residents' events; and the development and organization of artistic and cultural projects both in and outside of Berlin. The Künstlerhaus is a project workshop and a location for events, and its structure is comprised of many layers. Artists' Residency With its 25 studios, Künstlerhaus Bethanien represents one of the largest establishments among international residency programs. The selection of artists - predominantly in the area of visual arts - is carried out according to the standards of originality and creative quality. Individual applications are not accepted by the Künstlerhaus, which owes its international renown as one of the most prestigious institutes for the support of contemporary art to the stringency of its selection criteria. Project Workshop Künstlerhaus Bethanien is constantly at work on the development and realization of a large number of artistic and cultural projects, resulting in numerous public events. 20 to 30 events come about each year out of the studio program alone: exhibitions, work presentations, performances, and much more. A Location for Events Künstlerhaus Bethanien, however, is also a place of presentation that is used in a number of ways, where exhibitions and events are produced by the curatorial staff or by guest curators parallel to the international studio program. Beyond this, the renting of individual rooms has become standard practice. Advice Among Bethanien's most important services are its counseling activities. Artists are advised in respect to their projects, and suitable partners, organizations, and sponsors are recommended and introduced; the Künstlerhaus also provides recommendations and expertise in the application process for project financing, artists' residencies, and grants. In addition, advice is offered on initiatives for the establishment, restructuring, and optimization of artists' and studio programs, especially regarding questions of finance, tax, and administration (i.e. starting a company). In this context, cultural contacts to Eastern Europe (Poland, Hungary, The Czech Republic, Lithuania, Slovenia, Ukraine, and Russia) play a large role, with a focus on the development of stable partner relationships as well as the organization of exhibition projects. In view of the economic separation that continues to divide Eastern and Western Europe, this type of bridge-building activity will continue to remain one of Bethanien's most important tasks for years to come. International Cultural Work Künstlerhaus Bethanien was and continues to be a partner institution in numerous bilateral cultural programs in Berlin, such as the city partnership program, the program of cultural capitals of Europe, the "grenzenlos" projects (without borders), and many more. Publications An extensive publishing activity counts among Bethanien's services. Over the 25 years since the institute's founding, approximately 190 works have been published: books and catalogues on projects of every discipline, catalogues of resident artists, and magazines. Since 1994, the Künstlerhaus has been publishing its ambitious "Be Magazine," which is produced in German and English, as are the majority of Bethanien's catalogues, making its current exhibitions and topics of discussion well-known on the international art scene. "Be Magazine" constitutes the core of Bethanien's theoretical work and reflects phenomena of the current art scene from the perspectives of international critics, theoreticians, and writers. At the same time, it supports young Berlin authors in their assessment of the city's art production. Bethanien doesn't limit itself to a mere publishing role, but provides high-quality professional editorial accompaniment, copy-editing, and translation from its own means, not only building a solid reputation for its series of publications in the process, but lending a more enduring form to the projects and works of its young artists. Media Arts Lab Since 1997, the Künstlerhaus has become increasingly committed to the area of new electronic art forms with its own Media Arts Lab. This laboratory is dedicated to internet-based art and promotes those conceptual artists and projects that understand the computer not as an object of technological fascination, but as an object for aesthetic investigation. Since 1998, the Media Arts Lab has been inviting net specialists to take part in special "net conferences." Bethanien was one of the first institutions that integrated the young phenomenon of "net.art" into its current work, at the same time plugging into an emerging media art scene in the Eastern European states. Training Center for Curatorial Practice Due to its status as artists' residency program, Künstlerhaus Bethanien is a location of curatorial practice where the curatorial staff, together with guest curators and curatorial assistants, work in close dialogue with invited artists, enjoying their appreciation as contact persons, researchers, and partners in contention and working together on the realization of artistic concepts. Parallel to these artistic projects, performances, colloquia, symposia, and publications, the curators reflect upon their practice in "Be Magazine" as well as in various other special issues published by the Künstlerhaus.

LEVY Galerie

Kreuzberg

The LEVY Galerie was founded in 1970 by Hamburg resident Thomas Levy (b. 1947). With its multifaceted program, based not least on the pillars of Surrealism and Pop Art, LEVY Galerie has earned a first rate reputation among German galleries throughout the past decades. LEVY Galerie exclusively represents the artists Allen Jones, Marc Lüders, C.O. Paeffgen, Mel Ramos, and Daniel Spoerri, among others. It also represents the estate of Meret Oppenheim, in close collaboration with the artist’s family. Since September of 2004 the gallery has been located on the outskirts of Eppendorf in a loft-like space that offers fantastic possibilities for the presentation of art. The interior of the gallery is no less impressive than the enchanted exterior areas with their sculpture garden. The artworks on display have all the space they need within the gallery’s two expansive exhibition rooms. Since the implementation of LEVY 1 st VIEW in 2004 the gallery has also become more involved in the mediation and development of emerging contemporary artists. Since September of 2009 LEVY Galerie has an additional dependence in Berlin, which is focusing on young experimental contemporary art.

Lucas Carrieri Art Gallery

Schöneberg

History In December 2006, Lucas J. Carrieri opened his first gallery in Berlin at Torstrasse 96. The initial concept of the gallery was to promote Argentinian artists and wines (AB Project Berlin). However, the fervently cultural activities of the capital broadened Lucas’ horizon for new exhibitions on an international level such as, “Mario Borsato by Andy Warhol”, "Art Action is not dead" and " Francesco Rossi, una vida". Many of the projects were realized in cooperation with various cultural organizations, companies, institutions and embassies in Berlin. The gallery also worked on external projects such as "Gedächtnis Kirche" in Berlin’s memorial church, or "Argentinien Heute" at the Argentinian embassy. The multifaceted space at the Torstrasse 96 location allowed the gallery to offer a variety of performances and events that link art to fashion and thus, the gallery quickly became a renowned meeting place for the Berlin scene. In 2008 the gallery took over its owners name, “Lucas Carrieri Art Gallery,” and ever since concentrates its activities exclusively on art distribution. In late 2010 the Lucas Carrieri Art Gallery moved to Potsdamer Strasse, an old street with a rich tradition which is today one of the strongest cultural sights of Berlin. With the re-opening at the new location on April 29th 2011 the steady esthetic proposal of the gallery was renewed and new artists will be incorporated along with new modes of exhibition and cultural promotion. Promoted and represented artists Due to the variety of techniques, materials, spaces and new forms of visual communication, in recent years a new generation of young artists emerged, some of which have already achieved great fame without the support of institutions, galleries or critiques. These artists are characterized by their past which is enriched by experiences from the fields of graffiti, street art, comic, digital graphics, or advertising. By exhibiting their art, the Lucas Carrieri Art Gallery aims to witness and support the development of these artists. Based on his diverse cultural background and his experiences as an art dealer, Lucas Carrieri has created a network that allows international artist with various technical and artistic currents to exhibit and sell their art in Berlin. Further, the Lucas Carrieri Art Gallery supports its artists in their work outside the gallery, either in other galleries and institutions in Berlin, or other cities and countries worldwide. Especially the permanent links to Argentina, Italy and Spain make the Lucas Carrieri Art Gallery a privileged place for promoting and selling art works. Gallerist Lucas J. Carrieri was born in San Juan, Argentina in 1960. As the son of two artists, he was exposed to various artistic environments from a young age. He worked as a film critic in the local newspaper and graduated in Literature at the Universidad Nacional de San Juan. In 1985 Lucas Carrieri emigrated to Europe where he traveled around several countries to improve his language skills and get to know different cultures. In 1986 he settled in Italy, the birthplace of his grandparents, which quickly became his second home. In Italy Lucas was dedicated to the organization of multimedia events and while he became an active part of an international underground movement that characterized the '90s, he developed a passion for fashion, art and exotic cultures. In 2005 he moved to Berlin and is ever since exclusively devoted to his art gallery.

ME COLLECTORS ROOM BERLIN / OLBRICHT FOUNDATION

Mitte

ROOM FOR COLLECTORS + NEW PERSPECTIVES In a series of rotating exhibitions, we showcase the Olbricht Collection, containing works ranging from the early 16th century up to the present day. Selected curators are invited to give us their own perspective on the collection, whose driving focus draws on the core themes of human existence: life, love, eros, transience and death. A set fixture at our venue is the Wunderkammer (or ‘cabinet of art and marvels’), containing works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Besides works of art though, other collector’s items are on display, such as rare postage stamps, art nouveau objects and toys. In the café, shop and lounge, visitors can find room to exchange ideas, as well as reflect on and enjoy a sensual experience of art. In 2011 the theme of ‘collecting’ itself is also central to our programme. Besides discussions with international collectors (primarily, but not exclusively, of art), towards the end of the year we will also for the first time be holding reciprocal events with other private art collections. In autumn we will be hosting a show organized by the French collector Antoine de Galbert. At the same time, part of the Olbricht Collection is also on show in its exhibition venue in Paris, “la maison rouge”. May 2011 will see renewed cooperation with “la maison rouge” and the curator Jeanette Zwingenberger with the exhibition “Alles Kannibalen?” ROOM FOR EXCHANGE AND ENGAGEMENT The residential and exhibition building, situated in the immediate vicinity of the Kunst-Werke Berlin, was designed by the architectural firm Düttmann + Kleymann in conjunction with Thomas Olbricht. The generous 1.300 sq m exhibition space enables a division of the room, which invites both a direct engagement with the collection, as well as flexible open spaces for visitors. Behind the high glass façade there are a number of amenities, such as a Café, a Shop and a lounge area, spread across two floors. Ample space then for visitors to exchange ideas about the things they have seen.

Andreas Herrmann opened mianki. Gallery in the fall of 2008. It was initially intended to be a producer’s gallery. But soon it developed into a kind of "creative space" where unusual techniques and adaptations of different artists interact. At times, and depending on the individual artist’s kreative concept, the traditional notion of art is expanded: interior design as well as the design of light and fabrics are paid attention. In this way, the gallery arouses interest in audiences far beyond the traditional art aficionados.

Moeller Fine Art Berlin - New York

Kreuzberg

Under the direction of Stephanie Moeller, Moeller Fine Art Berlin opened its doors on 28 April, 2009 at Tempelhofer Ufer 11 in Berlin Kreuzberg. The Belle Epoque Palais Eger, commissioned by brothers Carl and Paul Eger in 1881 and designed by architects Gustav Knoblauch and Hermann Wex, was purchased in 1890 by Prince Aribert von Anhalt. In the 1980s and 1990s, the collector Hans-Hermann Stober used the courtyard carriage house as a meeting place for the Berlin contemporary art world. Today, redesigned by architect Thomas Kröger, the ground floor comprised of 350 square meters will continue this rich history and begin the next chapter of Moeller Fine Art. In addition to the New York gallery's established program of modern masters, Moeller Fine Art Berlin shows international mid-career and emerging artists.

NGBK (Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst)

Kreuzberg

NGBK - The grass-roots principal Its structure is programmatic The New Society for Visual Arts (NGBK) – an art society with 850 members, people with different professions and ambitions: cultural workers, scientists, political activists, architects, artists, art theoreticians, sociologists, media studies experts, students… Through their work as volunteers they all go to make up the organisation's distinctive structure, in which all project-related decisions are taken at grass-roots and realized jointly. It is this organisational structure which makes the NGBK a unique institution, not only on the German art scene but internationally. The "other" art society – since 1969 The NGBK was founded in Berlin at a time when the quest for change and new kinds of working conditions and ways of life – for a "new society" – was all-pervasive. As an art society it was designed as a counter-model to hierarchically structured institutions with homogeneous programmes. For almost 40 years now it has engaged itself with a wide spectrum of exhibition themes, presenting positions developed by both regional and international artists. This work has been made possible thanks to the kind support of the lottery foundation, the Stiftung Deutsche Klassenlotterie Berlin, which has funded the NGBK since its inception. The NGBK programme is very varied and addresses social questions that feature little in the work of other institutions. This said, a number of issues can be seen to recur again and again in the society's exhibitions, events, and publications. They include the position of visual art within society, gender issues, issues of fascism and national socialism, participatory models in contemporary art, new forms of art education, future models of work and working structures, positions against racism and for freedom of movement within our society. As a charitable body, the NGBK is in a position to invite young international artists independent of commercial interests, to present their positions and to support them in their experiments to break conceptional new ground. The exhibitions are accompanied and supplemented by discussions, lectures and other events, which questions concerning all aspects of society are examined in greater depth The work of the project groups All NGBK exhibitions and events are conceived by project groups made up of members of the society. Each year, members submit projects, which are then introduced, discussed and voted on at the general meeting. In this way, each member has the opportunity of actively shaping the programme in cooperation with at least four other members. The project teams work independently of one another and are supported and given advice by the staff at the society's office, which can provide experienced partners to assist them in all aspects of organizing exhibitions and projects. In addition to changing project teams, a number of groups have long been engaged in continuous work. The NGBK's Realismusstudio has been existence since 1973, albeit with changing personnel, and continues to presents several exhibitions each year. It addresses contemporary artistic positions on current social questions, continuously examining the relationship between art and observer, the "exhibition" format as seen by experimental methodology as well as the presentation of art and art education in public space. In this way, young, less well-known and unknown artistic positions as well as internationally renowned artists enter into a dialogue. Anyone can become a member Anyone becoming a member of the NGBK can directly take part, bring in their own ideas and in addition receive *invitations to all NGBK openings and events *free admission (insofar entrance fees are charged) *all NGBK publications at the reduced rate for members *free admission to the exhibitions of art societies which are members of the Working Group of German Art Societies (ADKV) *invitations to the meetings where new projects are introduced and discussed *reduced rates for art society excursions and other activities

Podbielski Contemporary

Mitte

Podbielski Contemporary was established in the heart of Berlin in early 2011 at Koppenplatz Number 5.This gallery emerged from the shared passion of Pierre André Podbielski, an architect and art dealer, currently partner at Galleria Rubin (Milan) and Isabelle de le Court while she was a PhD Candidate in History of Art at the University of Leeds, (UK), working under the supervision of Professor Griselda Pollock. The emphasis of Podbielski Contemporary’s programme is to represent contemporary artists who address the geopolitics of the Balkans, the Middle East and Italy in transcultural perspectives. Although the Balkans and the Middle East can be seen and read as two “transitional” geographic areas between East and West, they do represent more than geographic borders and situations. Crude geographic groupings and labels do not, however, give a true representation of the divisions that may exist between countries in these areas and fail to address the inner economic, social and cultural realities that exist in the face of external political pressures. These are the issues the artists of Podbielski Contemporary will address 1. Their works, more often than not, are the result of sustained and positive cross-border relationships known as transnationalism. They are better defined in such terms as "Itinerant Identities" or "Geographic Bodies" – coined by Ursula Biemann – more fitting to a world marked by virtual and instantaneous worldwide activities 2. In a context in which geographies are possibly losing importance, the figure of the artist has been increasingly assimilated to that of a nomadic individual, travelling the world. The resulted exhibited work frames his / her experience of migration and displacement, and subsequent reflection on homeland. As an act of survival, the artist confronts and challenges the globalization of culture. Berlin, long known for its division is now a city that although unified is also a multicultural landscape whose influence, in a time of globalization, reaches far beyond the boundaries of Europe. This has contributed to the city's unique cultural make-up, unstoppable development and visibility at an international level. Podbielski Contemporary seeks to promote transnational work (mostly contemporary photography and video installations) with exhibitions, scholarly catalogues and by finding this work a home in international private and museum collections. Its founders strongly believe that a gallery, besides representing artists and promoting their works in the optimal way, should serve as a centre for the exchange of ideas about art and culture. Podbielski Contemporary aims to merge art dealing activities with academic research, presenting special events such as artists talks, performances, conferences and screening evenings, to become not only a lively space for art lovers and art collectors, but also a cultural platform for young scholars and the Berlin art community in general.May its small-scale intervention help sustain wider efforts to overcome the compartmentalization of the art field between public and private institutions.

PROGRAM is a nonprofit project aimed at testing the disciplinary boundaries of architecture through collaborations with other fields. Initiated in 2006 by Carson Chan and Fotini Lazaridou-Hatzigoga, PROGRAM provides a discursive platform for artists, architects, critics and curators to explore ideas through exhibitions, performances, workshops, lectures, and residencies. PROGRAM intends to enrich and broaden our definitions of architecture, and to challenge traditional, domesticated modes of architectural practice and representation. Developing each project independent of an overarching agenda, PROGRAM is striving to diversify the ways we understand and make architecture. Central to our project is to engage the discourse with emerging creative processes that activate the space between pure theoretical research, professional praxis and architecture's social role.

SAMMLUNG HAUBROK

Friedrichshain

The Haubrok Foundation serves the purpose of promoting contemporary arts. Among other things it supports the various exhibtions at haubrokshows. Quintessential works of the Haubrok Collection constitute the centre of the foundation, thereby providing it with its capital fund. Barbara and Axel Haubrok have planted these works into the foundation, in order to secure the nucleus of their collection in the long run. In November 2010 the 13 works currently included in the Haubrok Foundation have been transferred to National Museums in Berlin, Nationalgalerie as a permanent loan. A work of Raoul de Keyser, purchased in 1988, has been the starting point of the Haubrok collection. During the following years we put our emphasis on collecting more paintings. However, at the beginning of the new millenium the works of Günter Förg, which included photographies and sculptures, gradually led us to embracing conceptual arts - now the focal point of the Haubrok collection. Today our collection includes more than 500 works. Among others, Jonathan Monk, Christopher Williams, Heimo Zobernig, Peter Piller, Martin Boyce, Carol Bové and Wade Guyton can be considered as some of the most important artists featured in the haubrokshows. In 2008 we transferred ten of our most important works - the heart of the Haubrok collection - into a charitable foundation. It now includes Gregor Schneider's "Das Schlafzimmer", the "Brancusi Raum" by Tobias Rehberger, "This is Propaganda" by Tino Sehgal and Andreas Slominski's "Hundemassenfang" In 2002 the collection went on public display for the very first time during an exhibition with the title "no return" in Mönchengladbach's Museum Abteiberg. In 2007 selected political works of the collection became part of an exhibition in Düsseldorf's Museum KunstPalast in the context of the project "Die Kunst zum Sammeln". Since 2005 we host regular exhibtions of various works of the Haubrok collection in Berlin. Initially those took place in our appartment in the Xanthener Straße, but in the spring of 2007 we moved to a showroom at the Strausberger Platz 19. At this venue we organise up to four exhibtions annually. Every Saturday our showroom is open to the public.

SIDE BY SIDE GALLERY AKIM MONET

Tiergarten

Gallery concept:

Located on Potsdamer Strasse within the former Tagesspiegel complex, Side By Side Gallery Akim Monet focuses on thematically curated exhibitions that juxtapose modern and contemporary art.

In walking distance from Mies van der Rohe’s landmark building the Neue Nationalgalerie, the former Taggespiegel complex on Potsdamer Strasse has been recently dubbed “the new hub for up and coming art galleries” and as “a new gallery-hotspot on the Berlin map”. The site now houses the Blain|Southern gallery and NolanJudin and it is located in the immediate vicinity of Arndt Berlin.

Side By Side Gallery relies on Akim Monet’s deep knowledge and subtle understanding of the history of 19th & 20th century art in order to explore and re-contextualize historically prevalent themes through modern and contemporary works of art.

By exposing thematic correlations, Side by Side Gallery moves beyond a singular chronological presentation in order to reveal converging and lasting influences.

Drawing upon his extensive international network within the art world, Monet has access to carefully selected works from distinguished private collections, artist’s estates and renowned galleries, as well as pieces coming directly from noteworthy contemporary artists worldwide.

The gallery holds three to five annual-seasonal exhibitions.

Singuhr Hörgalerie

Prenzlauer Berg

The singuhr sound gallery has been an important venue for sound art in Berlin for over ten years now. The nationally and internationally unique project has realised at least 60 audio-visual art exhibits - art that rejects one-dimensional classifications and reflects the individual artistic positions between the poles of music, visual arts and medial arts. The gallery's programmatic spectrum stretches from sound objects and kinetic sculptures to pure sounding spaces, from audio-visual productions to physically tempered and artistically designed rooms. The conceptual parenthesis nurtures the aspiration to present installative sound art - works that are conceived for a certain space and are also realised there. The Parochial Church in Berlin's Mitte district provided the space for this artistic endeavour for a productive ten years. This is now being documented in a catalogue that has been released at Kehrer Verlag: "singuhr sound gallery in parochial - 1996 - 2006". Since 2008 singuhr is partner of ohrenstrand.net. Since June 2007, both historic water reservoirs in Prenzlauer Berg have provided both a source of inspiration and a new home ground for the singuhr sound gallery. The industrial heritage site's unique architecture, its unique acoustics and its location at the centre of a lively neighbourhood have predestined the two repositories to become spaces for innovative artistic projects. The singuhr sound gallery's integrative concept forges links between renowned sound artists and the next artistic generation, between the urban arena and artistic events, between installative and performative forms. For the first time, multiple artists will show their installations simultaneously in different spaces. Works by different generations, groups and individual projects will encounter one another - a selected mix that delivers an overview of the current position of artistic productions within the heterogeneous field of sound art.

STEDEFREUND

Prenzlauer Berg

Stedefreund is a project by 12 Berlin artists who share the vision of a space used as a central hub for thematic and spatial interventions, for artistic positions and statements.

The goal is the public presentation and elaboration of individual artistic work. Solo and group shows are developed around conceptual themes. Interchange and cooperation with invited colleagues, international artist groups and exhibition spaces constitute a major focus.

Stedefreund was founded by 20 artists in 2006. The first exhibition space - a prefab slab building on Rosenthaler Straße in Berlin/Mitte, grew over the course of 2 years into a significant site for interventions that were not limited to indoor spaces. In March 2009 Stedefreund moved to a new space on Dorotheenstraße, not far from the Friedrichstraße S-Bahn station.

Stedefreund is currently run by a team of three: Anne Fäser (currently filled in for by Dieter Wenk), project director, outreach and curatorial support, Dirk Schaller, office, and Julia Staszak, administration.

For 2011/2012 Stedefreund is preparing collaborations with art spaces in Istanbul and Philadelphia.

(Robert Filliou) Since 1999 we have presented group shows oriented toward themes such as 'Naked Experience', 'Void' or 'Where do we go from here?' as well as exhibitions dedicated to artists like George Brecht, Bud Powell, Wols or Cézanne and a number of one person shows. STRYCHNIN Gallery

Friedrichshain

STRYCHNIN GALLERY BERLIN - NEW YORK - LONDON STRYCHNIN is a playground for artists from all around the globe, a place where collaboration is encouraged, new projects are constantly developed and creativity is the one and only thing that truly counts. Over the years STRYCHNIN has successfully participated in several major European art fairs such as Liste Cologne, Art.Fair 21 and BLOOOM in Cologne, SCOPE  Basel, Kunstsalon Berlin, Bridge Art Fair in London, Artief in Diest, Fusion 5 Festival in Cannes, Red Bull Fashion week in NYC and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome making quite an impression on collectors, curators, journalists and visitors alike. Owned by curator Yasha Young, STRYCHNIN remains dedicated to presenting emerging American, Canadian and Japanese artists to the European art world and vice versa. With a steady flow of shows opening worldwide STRYCHNIN features a variety of artists with particular individual styles rather than artists belonging to a collective "hip" movement. If you need to put a label on them though, try lowbrow turned highbrow, pop surrealism or fantastic realism among others. The gallery was founded in Brooklyn in 1998 and opened a European showroom in Berlin in 2002 and continues to host pop up shows through the galleries very own art agency in NYC, London and many other cities all over the world. Furthermore, STRYCHNIN and its agency successfully publish books, CD covers and also collaborate with a UK based porcelain manufacturer, spearheading the Renaissance of English ceramics. Ranging from painting to sculpture, photography to doll-making, STRYCHNIN seeks out the extraordinary and the unique: the beautiful, the sublime, the grotesque,  the peculiar and the comical. Featured works are suffused by popular culture - comics, TV, fantasy, contemporary cinema, science fiction, Google, film noir - making them highly accessible, yet they are also inspired by “high art", paying homage to the Baroque, the medieval hagiography or the Renaissance, blurring distinctions and pre-existing notions, resulting in contradictions that cannot easily be resolved. The works are finally more about a personal feeling than a universal claim. What is the viewer to make of a surreal, fantastic illustration done in silverpoint? Far from presenting a mere random selection of purely referential works, however, STRYCHNIN chooses to cherish the individual, both artist and viewer, and to thrive on the contradictions we all carry within us.

Substitut

Mitte

Substitut is an independent non-profit space and platform for art from Switzerland in Berlin founded by Urs Küenzi in 2007. The venue encourages a long term international exchange. The name Substitut plays on the behalf of the institute, subculture and even subversion. The name reflects the fact that it does not constitute a pure alternative space or an institution, but a mixture. The name Substitut can also be seen as a critical representation of art in society. Substitut is a project of Urs Küenzi (Art theoretician and independent curator, Berlin, Zurich)

Supportico Lopez - Berlin

Kreuzberg

Supportico Lopez was born in Naples in 2003 with the characteristic of being the project of two artists and a curator that decided to have a room in their flat open to public exhibitions of international artists. The project continued during years run by Gigiotto Del Vecchio – one of the founder – and Stefania Palumbo as a curatorial space for contemporary art diffusion, taking its name from the street in which it was located in Naples, in one of the oldest and most characteristic districts of the city and one of the most contradictory: “la Sanità”
In 2008 Supportico Lopez decided to start a new life again, moving away to Berlin. Here, in the new space in Graefestrasse 9 in Kreuzberg, the aim is to be a gallery in which the curatorial attitude of the two directors will be more and more a peculiarity.

takt artist residency

Friedrichshain

Takt Kunstprojektraum is an autonomous initiative started by artists in 2003. It runs without any external funding.

The residency

Since 2009 the residency has become the central element of the project.
10 rooms are set up as an Artist Residency program, designed to host active artists visiting Berlin. The work rooms are the core elements of this effort.
The main goal of the residency program is to provide artists visiting Berlin quick access to an environment that will foster their creative energies. Participating artists are invited and expected to explore their creative paths. These residencies are offered as an opportunity, but it is up to the artist to make full use of it. We do our best to assist and support, but each artist is responsible for their own activities.

Community

The takt residency has a strong element of community, and may be different from other residency programs you are familiar with. It merges a community environment with creative artistic exploration. The studios are all on the same floor, on either side of an L-shaped hallway. There are two kitchens and two bathrooms, which are shared by all those in the space.
The people attending the residency comprise a community of international artists, meeting in the space for a limited period. Each has their own studio to work in, but share the use and maintenance of the common areas. We organize meetings, at which the artists can present their work and exchange ideas. Part of the program is one open studio day each month. The goals are to create a platform for dynamic exchange, to allow the possibility for spontaneous collaborations, and to build up networks among artists.

Finances

The program exists without any external funding. The fees paid by the artists are used to keep the project running.

The building

The residency is on the first floor (one floor up from street level) of a historic building in the former eastern portion of Berlin. The space was empty for several years before we signed a lease in August 2007. The residency program replaces the former bureaucratic functions of the space with the dynamics of creativity and international exchange.
A bar/beer garden is located below the residency. This is a great place to meet and talk, as it is so conveniently located.

The neighborhood

The rooms are located in the East-Berlin neighborhood of Friedrichshain. The address is Grünberger Str. 1. The neighborhood offers many café‘s, restaurants, bars and shops. There is easy access to public transportation, and one can quickly get to other parts of the city. There are many artists living in the neighborhood and most people speak English as well as German.

TANAS

Tiergarten

The Turkish art and cultural scene developed tremendously fast within the last years, particularly in Istanbul. In the 1980s young Turkish artists broke with the traditional art of their country, at first unnoticed by the Turkish public and the global art world. After years of isolation this generation of artists in the 1990s indicated their wish to speak also internationally and set decisive examples - politically engaged, aesthetically radical and with new artistic arguments. The Istanbul Biennale, founded in 1987, by this time experienced an increasing significance and has since then a high standing for the contemporary art, not only within Turkey. The Istanbul Biennale got a local and international network going, of which the development is still pushed ahead first by private individuals and private foundations. Several big concerns and banking houses have set up new exhibition spaces like Borusan, Platform Garanti or PROJE 4L, all of which are explicitly meant to be platforms for the discussion of new and avantgarde tendencies. Apart from the Istanbul Museum of Contemporary Art (founded in the mid 1990s) SantralIstanbul was recently opened, a museum of contemporary art connected to the Bilgi University, which is at the same time a center of culture and education and accommodates the first international artist-in-residence program in Turkey. In view of this development people even spoke about the “miracle of Istanbul” at the turn of the millennium: a phenomenon which - not least in the context of discussions about the expansion of the European Union - by that time caused an increasing attention for contemporary art from Turkey especially in Germany, as proofed by numerous exhibition projects.

The project space Tanas is meant to further follow the continuous developments of contemporary Turkish art and to present them in Berlin - in close cooperation with Turkish persons engaged in the cultural sector and independent from representative duties. Tanas is supposed to be a platform for the steady discussion and interaction of Turkish artists and curators with the German and international audience. Berlin represents the proper position for this purpose with regards to the local cultural landscape as well as the social and political implications. Not least Istanbul and Berlin are connected by a sister-city arrangement since 1988 within the context of which a fine tangle of relations in the field of art has been created, for example by grants and cooperations of cultural institutions.Tanas is managed by René Block who now continues his long-standig examination of contemporary art from Turkey. Already in 1994 he presented a survey of a, at that time, unknown scene with Iskele. Türkische Kunst Heute (ifa-Galerie, Stuttgart).

With Orient/ation he set a new standard for the Istanbul Biennale in 1995 and 1998 the exhibition Iskorpit - Aktuelle Kunst aus Istanbul (Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin) followed. At present René Block is furthermore entrusted with the edition of a series of monographs about Turkish artists at YKY publisher’s in Istanbul.

Tanas is created in close cooperation with the Vehbi Koç Foundation in Istanbul. The Vehbi Koç Foundation supports educational, social and cultural projects and founded the first private museum in Turkey in 1980 (Sadberk Hanim Museum). TANAS is an anagram of Sanat, the Turkish word for art.

*****************

vierter stock projektraum berlin

Wedding

vierter stock projektraum berlin (VS) is both a project and an exhibition space. The focus of work at VS is the artist-in-residence program. Artists live and work in vierter stock for a duration of one to three months. For this program, VS focuses on rising artists from the international scene. During their stay in Berlin, these artists are able to gather new impressions from which they can develop a new project or work series. Following the stay, VS presents these works in an exhibition. Over the last three years, artists from China, Germany, England, Finland, France, Israel, Spain, Ukraine and the USA have shown their work in VS. In addition to the artist-in-residence program, regular exhibitions are also held. The main focus here is on established artists, who present experimental works in VS. In this capacity, VS also serves as a laboratory for new and unknown work by renowned artists. Hardly any other city currently offers as large a variety of art projects as Berlin. Ideas are given enough space here to grow and develop. VS was founded in 2006 and ever since then, has been part of this dynamic process. The vierter stock project began on the fourth floor of an unrenovated, turn-of-the-century building that is typical for Berlin. In May 2009, vierter stock projektraum berlin moved to a commercial space on the ground floor, and now offers artists and visitors more room in a new and more elegant environment.

The WENDT + FRIEDMANN Gallery (est. in 2005) offers a platform for contemporary art including different artistic positions ranging from figurative concrete to nonrepresentational, but featuring a particular individual authenticity. The stylistic variety is abstracted in painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video and installation. The artists we represent live and work in Berlin and feel obliged to the `New Berlin Realism`, which has put forward and taken as the gallery`s unifying theme. A long - term collaboration with these artists embody the fundamental identification of the Wendt + Friedmann Gallery as supporter and mediator of emerging contemporary art made in Berlin.

WESTBERLIN GALLERY

Wedding

Founded in 2009 by Elodie Bellanger & Guillaume Trotin, West Berlin Gallery specializes in street art & illustration. The gallery takes its name from its location, being located at the former border between Eastern and Western Berlin. The birth of street art in Berlin also occurred in Western Berlin in the late 1970s, which was another inspiration behind the gallery’s name. The gallery comprises a main exhibition room where monthly shows are hosted, as well as a showroom where our gallery’s most representative artworks are displayed. We have chosen to showcase mostly Berlin-based artists in the town that has inspired their work. We represent several street art artists including Alias, Prost, SP38 and Linda’s Ex who have started doing arts off the beaten track. On the street, that is. We have developed a relationship based on trust and mutual respect towards those unconventional artists. This has allowed us to provide not only regular exhibitions of their works, but also interviews and other interactions between the artists and the public. Having been one of the very first Italian street art artists, Giacomo Spazio then turned to pop art, using literature and music from the 70s and the 80s as an inspiration. His works look like they are from another planet and lead to the exact kind of reaction we think art should convey. We only showcase original artworks which are not only created on canvas but also on wood, iron and any other support. The artists we support have showed their talent on the walls of many cities. For us, this credibility is the reason their works should be displayed in art galleries. The other focus of the gallery is illustration, represented by artists such as Hara Katsiki, recently awarded with the Illustrative’s Young Illustrator Award 2010, French artist Niark1 and Chow Martin. Those artists manage to express their strong personalities through their outstanding works, and have become great assets to our gallery. The artists currently represented include Alias, Roland Brückner (Linda’s Ex), Prost, Giacomo Spazio, SP38, Alexander Clouchard Barbone, Niark1, Doppeldenk and Chow Martin to name a few.

WHITE SQUARE GALLERY

Mitte

The WHITE SQUARE GALLERY has been founded by the three gallery owners Xenia Litvin, Dieter Reitz and Dr. Elena Sadykova. Located in the historic centre of Berlin, the gallery is presenting an international programme of contemporary art. Besides already well-established and renowned artists, they also concern about young, promising talents, and they support and guide their career. Old and new media are equally represented at the gallery: besides paintings and drawings, graphic art and sculptures, the gallery presents photography and video works, performances and installations of different kind in various exhibitions. Especially with the presentation of huge, space-oriented installations, in which several genres meet, the White Square Gallery sets course. Artists Anonymous, Glaser / Kunz, Carsten Gliese, Camilla Dahl, molitor & kusmin belong to those artists that represent this aspect of the gallery. Another important item of the gallery programme is young painting and photography. Jan Mövius, Ione Rucquoi, Philipp Sladkowski present their works in experimental spaces either within the gallery or relocated. Cooperating with international guest curators and artists is an important supplementation of the gallery programme. For example, the collaboration with the curator Sandra Khare from Mumbai/India, who presented some prominent positions of contemporary Indian art for a European audience with the group exhibition ROOTS. Beyond that, the operational area of the gallery includes art intermediation as well as developping individual curatorial and designing projects for institutional as well as private clients.

ŻAK | BRANICKA

Kreuzberg

The ŻAK | BRANICKA Foundation and the ŻAK | BRANICKA Gallery have been established in cooperation between Galerie Magazin and ŻAK | GALLERY. Registered in Poland and located in Berlin, the foundation is optimally equipped to present projects that bring together Eastern European artists with their international counterparts. As the focus of the art world continues to shift eastwards, the ŻAK | BRANICKA Foundation stands at the helm of an exciting exploration, which moves through Berlin, investigating contemporary Eastern European art. It is the foundation\'s aim to foster the establishment of Eastern European, particularly Polish, artists in an international art context. The creation of ŻAK | BRANICKA Foundation, through the efforts of ŻAK | GALLERY and Galerie Magazin reflects and combines the shared interests and activities of both these establishments. They have already organized exhibitions of leading Eastern European artists, including: Pawel Ksiazek, Dominik Lejman, Robert Kusmirowski, Tomasz Kowalski, Anna Orlikowska, Jozef Robakowski, Zofia Kulik and many others. A united effort will enable the ŻAK | BRANICKA Foundation to decisively increase the visibility of Eastern European art in Europe\'s capital of contemporary art, Berlin. The activities of the Berlin-based ŻAK | GALLERY and Galerie Magazin have helped the ŻAK | BRANICKA Foundation build a network liaising Eastern European artists with cultural institutions worldwide; including museums, galleries and art fairs. This has been furthered by the international reputation of Berlin. In addition, the ŻAK | BRANICKA Foundation is engaged in raising funds to provide grants and scholarships for artists, as well as organizing exchanges and art residencies. The foundation\'s dialogue with curators, art historians and institutions will further advanced research and stimulate intercultural exchange. To create a lasting impression in an increasingly globalised world, the ŻAK | BRANICKA Foundation deems it necessary to highlight the important role of contemporary Eastern European art through dedicated work on publications and journals.
