GALLERY CONCEPT
Art as motor for social transformation and intercultural dialogue
With its issue-oriented, approach GALLERY LISTROS focuses on topics within the African context. This involves in particular an artistic involvment with topics specifically related to Africa. In addition, the presentation of artists from African countries and the diaspora offers an expanded view on a timely approach to contemporary art hailing from the African continent.
GALLERY LISTROS centers on art and dialogue and gives impulses for a change of perspective in order to support the development of a self-confident and prospering Africa. GALLERY LISTROS devotes attention to both the African continent and to Africa within ourselves. While intercultural dialogues is being advocated, the debate also includes the diaspora's role as an intermediary between cultures.
Changing exhibitions in the four large exhibition rooms (220 sqm) present works of art from the fields of painting, video, installation, sculpture, photography and new media. Accompanying programs provide space for projects, discussions and events.
In 2003, the collection “A DREAM IN A BOX“ affiliated with GALLERY LISTROS began, featuring some 29 artists. Since then, more than 120 creative minds have become LISTROS artists by donating one of their works to the gallery. For and with them, LISTROS association draws up projects and concepts. These included artists' journeys to Ethiopia, educational work and intercultural dialogue.
Selected works from the collection have been for sale in limited editions since 2008. Furthermore the collection can be devised thematically and rented out as travelling shows by the name of A DREAM IN A BOX. They have been viewed by more than half a million people in seven German cities so far.

ELVIRA-SOFIA SCHOTT. "Mein Listro + s" 2003. Acryl auf Holz 215 x 155 cm (VERKAUFT)
LISTROS art collection is called A DREAM IN A BOX and began at with the gallery's initial exhibition at Galerie Eva Poll, Berlin-Lützowplatz in May 2003. 29 artists from Berlin focused on the living conditions of working children and teenagers (shoeshiners) in Ethiopa. The resulting 29 works not only layed the foundation for the collection, but also triggered a new way of discussing Africa-related topics in Germany. From this evolved impulses for a change of perspective on Africa as well as the message that is so important for all LISTROS protagonists.
A DREAM IN A BOX most of all offers the chance to view the world in a new way and to tackle borders creatively. Art is seen as the personal engagement of the participating artists and as a catalyst for social transformation and an impetus for intercultural dialogue.
Today, more than 120 creative minds belong to the LISTROS-initiative. Their donation of one piece of art supports the gallery and the LISTROS association. The collection's pieces span a wide range, from realistic descriptions of experience to very personal views on the daily lives of Ethiopian listros (shoeshiners), to suggestions what we all have in common and can learn from each other.
Works from the collection can be thematically assembled and rented out as a travelling exhibition. Thus, A DREAM IN A BOX has so far been seen by more than half a million people in seven German cities. Selected works from the collection have been published in limited editions since 2008.
